Clinic and Surgical Services
CONSULTATIONS
Illawarra Equine Centre is open Monday to Friday for consultations by appointment.
To arrange a visit, please call Rachel or Lynne, in the Office on 0400 341313.
Our 24 hour emergency service is available when required, and may be contacted via this number also.
The clinic offers a full range of equine procedures from intensive treatment of the acutely ill foal to the evaluation of a chronic lameness.
Generally our veterinary staff will travel to attend your animal/s, however our Clinic facilities may also be visited, where you can also find a supply of equine health care products to purchase.
We are pleased to be able to offer Travel Free Days to our clients, which prove to be very popular for alot of our routine work.
Travel Free Days for our Southern clients (Nowra to Milton) are the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month.
For our Northern clients (up to Darkes Forest, Helensburg and Bulli) they fall on every 2nd and 4th Wednesday.
X RAYS
We are able to perform a large range of radiographic imaging techniques using state of the art technology,
which are sometimes needed to accurately diagnose horse disease and injury.
By using finest mamographic films we create x-rays of the highest quality.
Strict safety procedures are of course necessary, but we are able to x-ray your horse either on site, or at our clinic.
Generally, we can report on our findings the same day.
ENDOSCOPY
Our portable Fibre Optic endoscope is another tool which we sometimes may employ in the examination of your horse.
This non-evasive procedure allows examination of the respiratory tract, bladder, uterus and reproductive tract.
At the clinic we also have our video endoscope, which allows us to project the endoscopic images onto a screen, for discussion, and further analysis.
ULTRASONOGRAPHY
The surgery has 2 portable ultrasound machines, which we use to assist in diagnosis.
The ultrasound image is another non-invasive procedure which allows us to examine the reproductive tract, tendons, chest, lumps and swellings.
ELECTROCARDIOGRAPH (ECG)
Our portable ECG is used mostly with horses that may be performing poorly in competitions and at the track.
Once the leads are attached to your horse, the ECG can create a trace of heart rythms, which can be examined for any abnormailities.
The ECG may also be used in Pre- purchase examinations where the general well being of the animal is being assessed.
LAMENESS – EXAMINATIONS
Our team has had vast experience in the examination and assessment of lameness in horses.
We are able to employ a full range of nerve block and other techniques which will allow us to pinpoint problems that can be difficult to determine.
Both causes and treatment of lameness in horses can vary greatly.
Accurate diagnosis is vital in seeking a successful outcome for your animal.
If your horse shows signs of lameness, consult a professional, and avoid further injury or problems.
DENTAL WORK
Your horses good health depends on good teeth.
For young horses, under the age of 5, we recommend a veterinary dental check every 6 months.
The older horse should also have his teeth checked by a vet annually.
We are able to perform a comprehensive, range of preventative and surgical dental procedures, which are all performed using the kindest techniques including sedation where necessary.
This specialised work is vital to your horses wellbeing and performance.
SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Vets at Illawarra Equine Centre regularly perform a range of surgical work under iv anaesthesia in our well equipped surgery.
We employ up to date techniques and provide exceptional post surgical care and observation at the clinic, where we provide for short and long term equine hospitalisation.
Any procedures which cannot be undertaken by Illawarra Equine Centre Veterinary staff will be referred to the appropriate specialists.
